Pictures from my garden

The first full day of summer vacation was near perfect! (weatherwise, anyway) The heat/humidity/rain has moved on, and it was so gorgeous out that I had to go for a run. My son rode along on his bike. We had to navigate around a few puddles, but all in all, not bad. I downloaded the new Peter Gabriel song, “Down to Earth”, from the Wall.e movie to add to my running playlist. I love his voice, and the song is good.

In the afternoon, I got out the camera and took a walk through the yard to see what was new.

The peonies are winding down, and looking weathered and windblown. Days of wind and rain will do that. Four of the plants are so top heavy with blooms that they’re weighing down the cages. I went through and deadheaded about 20 blossoms to lighten them up. They looked happier afterward. I need at least one more bouquet before I say goodbye. Such a short season.

Our adopted rose bush (rescued from my in-laws South Carolina house, where it looked like a tasty deer snack) is getting ready to burst out in blooms. The first rose of 2008 is the photo at the top; above are more buds.

And lastly, I’ve planted four wisteria vines along the pergola. Two of the four made it to the top last summer, but this is the first time they’ve bloomed from “above”. Oh, I can’t wait until it is a wisteria ceiling of green and blue, with a delicious scent. Not this year, but it will happen.

Wrapped up the day with a baseball game. It truly is summer.

Thanks for indulging my photo day. I’m still adjusting to this vacation thing. See you tomorrow with the giveaway winner, and other news ….
