Indulging my wonky side

fall 2008 reading + listening recommendations | simple pretty

Though I love to spend hours (and hours) looking at letterpress and cute designs from Japan, I also get incredibly wonky at times. (Cue my love for Jon Stewart) This weekend the wonkiness was in abundance:

  • I watched Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room Totally depressing (and not so timely, since it was released in 2005, but in a way, completely relevant as the themes are eerily similar to the current credit crisis).
  • I finished reading Traffic (and for bonus wonky points, I got it at the library!) I confess: my perfectionism requires that I stick with books that I start. Traffic was interesting, but I would have been better off timewise just reading an excerpt.
  • I listened to This American Life This week’s episode, Going Big, had a wonderful story about Geoffrey Canada and the Harlem Children’s Zone/Baby College (helping parents be better parents; improving children’s lives). I strongly suggest you catch it at iTunes if you missed it.

And then, undoing all of the wonkiness, I read the New York magazine article about Alexis Stewart, followed by a good chunk of time reading her blog. Highly entertaining. I like Alexis. The girl can bake. And wrap. I wonder why?

Oh, and after seeing the preview during Mad Men, I really want to see Revolutionary Road.
