My media-filled weekend

home office desk organization | simple pretty

The upside to our less than desirable weather has been that, without the distraction of the outdoors, you can get a lot accomplished indoors. And such was my weekend. The New Yorker arrived on Saturday (late, but not “officially” late). Usually, this means a frenzied race to read it before the next issue arrives, but as this was the style issue, most of the articles were appealing and quick reads. I especially enjoyed the profiles of Isabel Toledo and Michelle Obama. (only the Obama profile is available online)

I also hit the dvd backlog hard. Saturday (and Sunday) were spent with Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy, in Pride & Prejudice. It was superb, and I envy those of you who have enough free time to watch it over and over. I totally get why, though. The final three hours were riveting and time just flew by. As soon as the credits rolled on P&P, it was downstairs to watch To Kill a Mockingbird with my husband and son. We started watching this movie while staying at The Carneros Inn, and finished on Sunday night. Excellent movie, and I’m proud of my son for choosing it. He will still have to read the book, however.

In non media activity, I am still in the throes of getting rid of stuff as well. Once again, spending too much time indoors makes you acutely aware of how the “stuff” is taking over. I started with the desk (see photo above) and then moved on to the pile of paper by my bed. I can’t part with many of my magazine tear sheets and print outs, but I need to find a system that stores them with less of a cluttered, “I’m crazy” look. I’m thinking either magazine files or nice, labeled boxes. (Or perhaps this (all from Russell + Hazel), but it would have to be in the sold out charcoal. Or perhaps this?) Anyone have an organization strategy they’d like to share?

Until tomorrow, then. See you back here.

I use something like this… http://www.amazon.co.uk/Medium-Quick-View-Carrying-Translucent/dp/B000X22AH6/ref=sr_1_32?ie=UTF8&m=A3660DNYZL4X1I&s=generic&qid=1205189598&sr=1-32 to store my tear sheets, but I bought it when we lived in Italy and can’t find them here in the states. It’s full, so I too have been trying to figure out what to do. Buy card stock, glue the tear sheets on them, punch holes and stick in a notebook, that’s a bit too much, especially since I tend to go through it periodically and throw out ideas that no longer appeal to me.
Of your choices I like the letter boxes from Russell and Hazel or the MO starter kit. But really, I like the MO starter kit because it looks like fun. :-)

BTW, when we built this house I was able to go to my files and pull photos of what I wanted for most of the rooms. I think it helped/drove the contractor crazy.
I am currently going through old magazines and tearing so this is a timely subject for me.
Let us know what you pick!

I recently re-did my home office and went crazy at The Container Store. Do you have those near you? It’s the most amazing place- makes me realize how unorganized I am. But the office is now incredibly organized- I use the magazine files and document boxes for all of my keepers. Good Luck!

I’m struggling with the same problem! Until I find the perfect solution I’m just going to organize my tear sheets by category {home decor, dream house, gift ideas, travel, recipes, etc.} in separate binders and go from there. It may not be ideal but it will help save me from the plethora of stacks I have cluttering up most rooms of my house!

Thanks again for your ideas on what to visit {especially where to eat yummy cupcakes + drool over fantastic stationery} while in Chicago. I can’t wait!
